What is a neck lift?
Aging and major weight fluctuations can cause our neck skin to become loose and wrinkled and our neck muscles to become weaker. This aging combination often results in “turkey neck”—when our platysma bands (neck muscles) stand out against our neck skin. Or, if you have recently gained a significant amount of weight, you may struggle with the appearance of a “double chin” from the excess skin hanging off your neck.
A neck lift procedure addresses both sagging skin and loose muscles in the neck. By removing excess skin, tightening platysma muscles, and lifting underlying tissues, a neck lift is able to provide a smoother, more youthful appearance to the neck. A neck lift can also contour the jawline and reduce jowling in the lower face.
What are the benefits of a neck lift?
A neck lift can have numerous benefits, including:
- Smooth and contour the neck
- Rejuvenate your appearance
- Tighten underlying muscles
- Increase neck strength
- Improve confidence
How is a neck lift performed?
Depending on the extent of your skin and muscle laxity, Dr. Reedy or Dr. Lindsay will perform a cervicoplasty to remove excess skin and a platysmaplasty to remove or tighten muscles in the neck. If you are struggling with excess neck fat, they may also perform liposuction to slim your neck.
Neck lift surgery takes approximately 2 to 3 hours depending on the extent of your procedure and the quality of your skin. Neck lifts may be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on your preference. Neck lift surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you’ll be able to return home following your surgery.
How long does it take to recover from a neck lift?
Some swelling and bruising is normal after a neck lift and may last up to 10 days. Most patients return to work and light physical activity after 2 weeks of their neck lift procedure, with final results visible within 6 months.
Is a neck lift included in a facelift?
While most facelifts will address sagging in the upper part of the neck, facelift surgery doesn’t always address the entire neck. Patients often combine a neck lift with a facelift for more advanced rejuvenation.
Neck lift with mini facelift
For patients with good facial skin and muscle tone who simply want a little lift, Dr. Reedy and Dr. Lindsay offer a mini facelift. Unlike a traditional facelift, the incision required for a mini facelift doesn’t extend into the upper forehead, making it a considerably less invasive procedure. The incision will still be hidden in the hairline and behind the ear.
A mini facelift can correct a variety of concerns, including:
- Jowling in the mid to lower face
- Marionette lines
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sagging skin
When paired with a neck lift, a mini facelift can also smooth and contour the jawline, reduce a double chin, and rejuvenate the neck.
